The woman with whom I wrote the book The Reluctant Psychic had to train herself as a small child to separate the living from the dead. When she was very little, she was mostly alone—although that’s not what she experienced as she saw souls that had passed everywhere. When she went to school for the first time, she came home and asked her mother why all the children had “so many helpers around them” but she did not. Where were her helpers? Her mother, thinking her daughter was missing out in some way, marched into the classroom for a talk with the kindergarten teacher who was, predictably, baffled. “I’m alone with 30 children every day. No one has any helpers. Your daughter has a big imagination. Or she’s fibbing. Is she a fibber?”
After that, Fiona taught herself how to distinguish the dead from the living. She noticed that often their feet did not touch the floor, or that they were dressed in ways that did not seem to fit in with the current styles, and also, of course, no one else seemed to acknowledge them except for her. The only problem was she cannot see her own beloveds on the other side very well—her mother, her father, her husband. Even the most powerful psychics—and Fiona is very powerful—doesn’t see everything. There are, as she herself has told me, so many ways to be psychic. In fact, everyone is, according to her, psychic in their own way.
We may not see the dead on the other side as corporeal beings and hear them talking to us in their recognizable voices—but each of us has a particular and unique way of connecting with those on the other side. We have dreams that tell us the future or connect us with our departed loved ones. We know things and we don’t know why. We are good at following our guts and trusting our hunches. I once asked my mother the secret of her green thumb and she answered, “You just put the flowers where they want to go.” Some of us can talk to the plants and others to the animals, and still others to the weather. Many of us are novelists and poets and musicians and artists directly channeling from the other side. The truth is we are all in conversation with the dead—whether we are paying attention or not.

I do not see or hear dead people. I am not a medium or an intuitive. But I have learned to trust those stray thoughts that seem to flicker through my brain as if from nowhere. I no longer “let them go” as I learned in a patriarchal spiritual tradition—but rather take a little look at them and trust they are not accidentals. If someone from the other side pops into my head, I wonder why and now ask them how we might collaborate. I stay curious and open. If an idea for an article or a book or a story or a little bit of writing or something I need to research appears, I follow it, jot it down, and trust the words. I’ve learned to listen to that still small voice within. Since I began trusting that I, too, am psychic, my writing has transformed. I now trust the dead to lead me, word by word, to where I need to go and what I need to say.
I have also over the past few years begun helping others to trust their own psychic perceptions and intuitions. And I’ve been awed by how their work and art has blossomed when they began to collaborate with those on the other side. Collaboration, though, is key—not just with the dead but with the living. Working with Fiona empowered me to trust my own psychic powers but I also had gifts to offer her from the other side. I knew how to engage with the dead when I couldn’t see them or hear them and she needed to know how to do that when she could not perceive her loved ones. When she thought she was alone and did not have helpers. When I knew she did.
Each of our psychic gifts is a gift to someone else when we bring it into the world—and our psychic gifts woven together can transform the very belief-sphere in which we live, returning us to a realm of magic and miracles, grace and mercy and love.
All of my workshops are about helping people reopen the channel of conversation with the other side and experiencing that the dead are real and want to be our helpers. I’ll be offering an extended version of my introductory experience through the Shift Network in August. (stay tuned) But I also offer Time Travelers, a special six-month journey—from the Summer Solstice to the Winter Solstice—to descend into the depths of deep time and claim our own psychic gifts. This group is limited to 13 people and I have two spots left, and two maybes right now. As this is a commitment of time and spirit, I usually only offer it to people who have studied with me…but how knows in what lifetime we have journeyed together so if it is calling to you, please reach out to me. I trust that there is a reason the course has not yet entirely filled. You can read all about it here.
Time Travelers Intensive
This intensive journey will take us back through the human story through the epochs and ages of the earth as we explore together the multiplicities of lives that weave through our souls. Who are we? Who have we been? Where have we been? How can we access the lost wisdom of lifetimes?
As modern human beings living within the Sixth Extinction we most certainly feel a legacy of trauma behind us—the wars, the misogyny, the violence, the slavery, the many abjections of civilization. Yet the only way to alchemize all of that suffering is to see around it, beneath it and beyond it, into the experience of the animate everything that is our soul—that has known the rooted intelligence of plants, the ecological sanity of animals, and the intimate connectivity of all that is. Can we remember our lost ways of being and knowing in the world? Can we reclaim our passage through death after death into rebirth and reincarnation? Can we access the radical sobriety of the long story—in which nothing is ever lost to us and there is all the time in the world to walk the path of the heart?
Why are we here in this lifetime? What blessings and prayers have we carried we us through the eons? Where are we going? Where do we want to go?
On this journey together we will explore a variety of ways to tap into our deepest intuitions and most powerful imaginings. We will each keep a journal—visual, written or musical—of our travels through deep time. Participants will be asked to choose an artistic medium to work in (collage, poetry, music, dance, sculpture, painting) in order to express and alchemize our discoveries. Each week will include a short reading and series of exercises—and our journey will finalize with a solstice celebration to share with the wider community what we have seen, what we are holding, and what we want to send forward into our futures.
This course begins just before the summer solstice and ends at the winter solstice.

This has been the free version of my newsletter and I also offer a paid version that includes a monthly zoom conversation about our experiences with those on the other side, as well as excepts from the books I am currently working on. My next book Take Back the Magic: Conversations with the Unseen World is available for pre-order.
I’ve mentioned my son, Jason, who died in 2013, here before. His younger brother, Colin and wife Lynn, recently purchased 280 plus acres of land with an off-grid home on it. There’s a lot of work involved - a first garden, an apple orchard that needs reviving, black walnut trees and an ancient, hollow Grandmother Black Walnut close to the house with whom I’ve been having conversations and making plans for a ceremony. Jason was an outdoor man, who loved hard work. He worked on an organic dairy farm from the time he was a teen and had a sustainable logging business that Colin helped with a couple of summers. Jason also was ‘motorhead’ - loved working on tractors, and all sorts of machines. Colin and I drove around the land last week, on the old logging roads that cross the land, in what is like a golf cart on steroids. There are so many biomes on the land and he wanted to show me the stand of huge hemlocks, and the largest violet patch I’d ever seen. We harvested some for medicine. While we were driving around, Colin told me how present Jason is. How he asks for Jason’s help when he isn’t sure what tree to remove or where to prune. And Jason is right there with directions. Jason is very present in my everyday as well. And I am so grateful that Jason’s youngest brother not only acknowledges his presence, but is involving him in his day to day life, and trusting the help and information Jason gives him. It would be the greatest gift if Jason was still here in the physical. But it is such a gift that he is still with us, and that my family is also aware.
This is one of the great strengths of your work Perdita- busting wide open the definition of psychic, and teaching us that we all are. Thank you!
